Rafael Vindigni - Quello che sorprende di più del tuo lavoro sono i supporti su cui dipingi. Da cosa nasce questa idea?
Peter Hawkins - Ho iniziato a dipingere superfici diverse, perché la superficie collegava il soggetto e il tema dei dipinti. Per esempio ho dipinto sopra un banco di scuola, perché è quello che era il vostro tempo a
scuola.
Inoltre mi piace lavorare su legno.
RV - Assembli tu le tavole di legno?
PH - Si, li assemblo io. Li compro da cantieri di bonifica nella zona est di Londra. Di solito hanno bisogno di essere strofinati e levigati perché sono molto sporche.
Poi li taglio a misura e li metto insieme.
RV - L'idea pittorica nasce in base al supporto o è il supporto ad essere creato in base a quello che vuoi rappresentare?
PH - Penso che sia un pò di entrambi. A volte trovo qualcosa di interessante da dipingere, come una porta o un finestrino della macchina e poi l'idea viene in base al pezzo trovato.
RV - Tra i tuoi soggetti compaiono spesso poliziotti, militari in mimetica, squadre d'assalto e mezzi d'aviazione. Perché? Vogliono attaccarci o ldifenderci?
PH - Credo sia una cosa nostalgica per me. Sono sempre stato interessato ad astronauti e viaggi nello spazio da quando ero un ragazzino. Anche la seconda guerra mondiale è stata molto interessante per me. Con i soldati e la polizia dò allo spettatore una chiara idea di autorità che sfida il senso del dipinto.
RV - Spesso appaiono astronauti e antenne che scrutano lo spazio. Come concepisci l'universo?
PH - Penso che l'universo è infinito, e la nostra è una parte molto piccola. Ma credo che gli esseri umani e la terra sono unici e non ci sono altre forme di vita avanzate come noi nello spazio.
RV - I tuoi soggetti sono solitamente girati di spalle o indossano una "maschera". Perché nascondi la loro identità?
PH - Perché significa che lo spettatore può creare nella sua mente chi è quella persona. Questo lo rende diverso per ogni fruitore.
RV - Come concepisci le situazioni surreali dei tuoi personaggi?
PH - Sogno di loro a volte o ubriacandomi...
RV - Hai mai pensato di entrare in una casa e dipingere su tutte le porte che trovi?
PH - Sì, ma non l'ho ancora fatto...
RV - Parlaci di quando dipingi. La tua tecnica? Il momento in cui lavori? Se hai dei riti particolari prima e dopo aver concluso un'opera?
PH - Io uso pitture ad olio e tratto tecniche abbastanza classiche, atelier, vetrai, ecc. Mi piace buona luce, musica ad alto volume, un buon caffè, e avere una birra quando ho concluso.
RV - Qualcosa sulla situazione politica di Panama?
PH - Tagliente in modo amichevole.
RV - Europa in 3 parole.
PH - Cibo, vino, nuoto.
RV - Infine, come metti un elefante in frigorifero in 3 mosse.
PH - Un'ottima domanda.
Vorrei... 1- mettere una nocciolina nel frigo. 2- Guidare un camion a forma di topo a 67,5 miglia per ora sull'elefante. 3- Chiudere la porta.

Rafael Vindigni - What is surprising about most of your work is the media on which you paint.Where does this idea?
Pete Hawkins - I started painting different surfaces because the surface related to the subject and theme of the paintings. For instance I painted on school desk tops because the paintings were about your time at school.
Also I like working on wood.
RV - Do you assemble the wooden boards?
PH - Yes I do assemble them. I buy them from reclamation yards in east London. They are usually need to be scrubbed down and sanded as they are very dirty. Then I cut them to size and put them together.
RV - The idea of painting was born according to themedia or themedia is to be created on the basis of what you want to represent?
PH - I think it’s a bit of both. Sometimes I find something interesting to paint on, like a car door or a car window and then the idea will come from finding that.
RV - Among your subjects often appear policemen, soldiers in camouflage, assault teams and transport aviation.Why? They want to attack or defend ourselves?
PH - I think that is a nostalgic thing for me. I was always interested in astronauts and space travel when I was a kid. The second world war was also very interesting to me. With the soldiers and police it gives the viewer a clear idea of authority and that challenges the meaning of the painting.
RV - Often appear astronauts and antennas that scan the space. How to conceive you the universe?
PH - I think the universe is endless which makes us a very small part. But, I think humans and earth are unique and there are not other advanced life forms like ourselves in space.
RV - Your subjects are usually filmed from behind or wearing a "mask".Why you hide their identity?
PH - Because it means the viewer can make up in their mind who that person is. It makes it different for every viewer.
RV - How to conceive the surreal situations of your characters?
PH - I dream about them sometimes or by getting drunk...
RV - Have you ever thought to enter in a house and paint on all doors that are?
PH - Yes but I have not done that yet...
RV - Tell us about when you paint. Your technique? The moment in which you work? If you have any special rituals before and after completing a work?
PH - I use oil paints and I use quite classical techniques like atelier and glazing etc. I
like good light, loud music, good coffee. I like to have a beer when its finished.
RV - Something on the political situation in Panama?
PH - Edgy in a friendly way.
RV - Europe in 3 words.
PH - Food, wine, swimming.
RV - Finally, tell us how you put an elephant into a refrigerator in 3 moves.
PH - A very good question.
I would... 1. put a peanut it the fridge. 2. Drive a truck in the shape of a mouse at 67.5 miles per hour at the elephant. 3. Shut the door.
